Protecting Your PIMS Datafile From A Power Outage

Believe it or not, many PIMS Users don’t have a Battery Backup Unit (UPS) attached to their PIMS Server(s).  This is tragic in that a power outage will cause the PIMS Server to stop running and loose whatever is in it’s record cache.  Basically, it has the rug pulled out from under it!

This could cause an “end-of-file” error in your datafile.  The Server will alert you to this when you boot it back up.  Thankfully, the build-in “Maintenance” routine will almost always fix this.

To keep this from happening, you need to attached a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) up to your Server.

We found that the best UPS to use for a standard PIMS Server is the “Power Saving Back-UPS XS 1500” (Model# BX1500G).  This unit will not only keep your Server running for quite awhile during a power outage, but it also comes with a cable that attaches to your computer (both Mac and Windows).  On Mac, it’s automatically recognized in the Control Panel (Energy Saver).

You can configure the UPS to gracefully shut your machine down when the backup power reaches a certain level.  This will also gracefully quit your PIMS Server and prevent datafile damage.
